A Funnelweb World

Settling in and itching to go

Posted by sg On June - 4 - 2008

The first week in a new job is always challenging - sorting out technology, trying to remember the names of everyone you meet, figuring out the best way of getting to and from the office and so on.

So its been one of “those” weeks, though its been getting better with each day.

The highlights:

  • induction day was probably the best I’ve ever had (and there have been a few of them). Practical, engaging, useful and lunch was good too.
  • NO MORE LOTUS NOTES - so good I have to say it again - NO MORE LOTUS NOTES. Instead we use Outlook 2007.
  • NO MORE LOCKED DOWN PC’S or blocked websites, and permission to install whatever we want. Its so refreshing to have an employer who trusts their staff to be sensible with their internet and pc use
  • Fresh fruitboxes delivered daily to the office for the staff
  • A range of herbal teas and coffee also provided on each floor
  • Table football and tv, and something about an iTunes library being available
  • A cool smartphone, a vodafone one which I am still figuring out how to work
  • 15 minutes ride to the London office by scooter, and parking right out the front
  • The London office is about 2 minute’s walk from the river and the Globe theatre, which is a lovely area for walking around at lunchtime

It really feels like I’ve joined a cool web agency, probably far too trendy for the likes of me but at least I don’t seem to be the oldest person there :-)

Though I haven’t yet been what I would call flat out since I’ve started, as people keep telling me - “just be patient”. But that’s difficult for a hyperactive person like me who gets bored waiting more than 10 minutes for a bus. I’m itching to get my teeth into something, especially after having had so much down time since the last job.

I’m hopefully going to find out about my first project work tomorrow and today I’ve been spending time talking to people about some of the really good projects that are going on, which is great. We are doing amazing things with digital download sites, tourism portals and online clothing ecommerce sites to name a few. And pitching for some work on a B2B Portal.

And on Friday we have an all-day community day, which the organisation has every 6 weeks as a way of internal knowledge sharing and team building. It will be a great opportunity to meet the rest of the Retail, Media and Entertainment team, which I’m part of. So far, everyone I’ve met has been really friendly.

Can’t wait. In the meantime, I’m trying my best to do what people tell me - be patient - and spending my time meeting more people when I can and finding out about the interesting things that they do.

We’ll get there, we’ll get there.
