I heard on the news the other day that the eighties were recently voted the most popular decade. And that got me thinking about life back then. So I thought I’d create a list of things I remember most about it.
Bearing in mind I was living in Sydney for most of the eighties, here it is:
- Saturday afternoons watching live footy on normal tv, for free
- Driving into central Sydney and parking anywhere, for free
- Calling the police - and them turning up
- Walking back to my car alone at 4am on Saturday and Sunday mornings with a bag stuffed with cash without worrying about being mugged
- Leaving it in my freezer all weekend until the bank opened on Monday
- Thinking it was the thin edge of the wedge when a neighbour fitted a car alarm
- Having a reason to go into a bank
- Never having to pay to go into a club - or a pub, even when live entertainment was on
- Managing fine without mobile phones and email - and still being able to meet up with people
- No uni fees, and having to reserve books in the library
I guess things did seem a little less crowded, a little less stressed and a bit more laid back, back then……
