My web 2 business idea

Posted by sg On October - 11 - 2008

Lately I’ve been doing lots of future gazing and talking with smart, like-minded people about a range of web 2 business ideas.

Like several of my friends, I’ve come to the realisation that working for yourself has got to be more fun than working for others. The challenge though is in finding the right idea.

So the other day I started to really give it some serious thought. Words such as mobile, London, free, marketing, online/offline and presence awareness began running through my mind.

Then today in Sainsburys I had a “eureka” moment.

I’m going to create a diagram to outline the idea and will then bounce it around with a few friends to see if they’ve heard of something similar. Fingers crossed they haven’t.

This could be the beginning of a whole new adventure. Or it might lead to nothing, of course. But at least it will be fun trying it :-)

Intriguing idea! This is my reflection on the years I spent freelancing. The great things: you will develop unbelievable resilience (if anything goes wrong there is no-one to fall back on but yourself), great budgeting skills (as you have to create your own income) and you will quickly get used to really being the master/mistress of your own time and destiny (wonderful!) If you want to continue to freelance it is important to make sure your area of work/expertise is a growing one (so you have lots of options for work). My problem toward the end of my freelancing was that my areas of expertise were in sectors which were stressed and under attack so they were declining (i.e. the cultural and arts area was under seige by the latter years of the Howard government which saw massive cuts and control of the arts/cultural arena).

Yeah, freelancing is tough, I remember when you were doing it.

Hopefully I can develop this business idea around my fulltime working for at least a few months. (I’m not usually that busy at work and this will give me stuff to contemplate in the quiet times while at my desk).

I’ve been thinking about the idea more today and would describe it as “linking online content with offline presence and offers via mobile messaging.”

Just got to find out if anyone else is doing it.

The idea is coming along reasonably well. Meaning that I have a basic design of what I’d like to build and I have some friends committed to helping once we get things moving along a bit.

To do that I’ve had to resort to refreshing my javascript skills so I can then get to step two with integrating the geolocation API from google. And sadly js was one language I never really grasped.

So it will be a while before I get much further, sadly. Maybe one day……… but you gotta have a plan, as they say.
